FUTA Teaching Hospital to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare in 2026 – CMD

The Chief Medical Director of the Federal University of Technology Akure Teaching Hospital, Prof. Olusegun Ojo, has said the institution is set to play a key role in improving Nigeria’s healthcare delivery in 2026 following its takeover by the Federal Government.

Ojo, in a New Year message, described 2026 as a period of consolidation and expansion for the hospital, which was formally converted to a federal tertiary health institution in 2025.

He recalled that his appointment by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on March 5, 2025, initiated the transition of the former University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital to federal ownership.

According to him, the process reached a major milestone on October 23, 2025, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Government and the Ondo State Government under Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

Ojo said the agreement placed the facility under the Federal Ministry of Health, leading to the establishment of FUTA Teaching Hospital and expanding access to tertiary healthcare services in Ondo State and neighbouring areas.

He disclosed that shortly after the handover, key management positions were filled, while an inter-ministerial team later verified staff for absorption into the federal civil service.

The CMD added that new departments and structures have been introduced to align the hospital with global standards, stressing that staff welfare, equipment upgrades, and strategic partnerships will remain priorities in 2026.
