Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday revealed that his administration has invested over N8.4 billion in supporting more than 12,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) over the past four years as part of efforts to combat poverty in Lagos State.
Speaking at the 2025 edition of the Micro Enterprise Support Initiative (MESI) for vulnerable and indigent residents, held at the Blue Roof, Ikeja, the governor said the initiative aligns with his vision of an inclusive Lagos where everyone has the tools and confidence to succeed.
“This initiative is a key part of our administration’s mission to empower women and reduce poverty through the development of micro-enterprises,” Sanwo-Olu said. “We’re focusing on skills development and increasing support for women-led businesses, all driven by our commitment to unity, innovation, and impactful service delivery.”

Over 1,700 residents—mostly trained through vocational centres—benefited from the latest round of MESI, receiving items such as hairdressing kits, sewing and stoning machines, barbing equipment, agricultural tools, cash grants, POS machines, cake mixers, and photography equipment.
The governor urged beneficiaries to use the items responsibly:
“Grow your businesses, create jobs, and support others. Your success contributes to our collective progress. Let this be the beginning of something great. As you rise, remember to lift others along the way.”
He added that empowering one entrepreneur positively impacts entire families and communities, reinforcing the state’s economic growth.
In her remarks, the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu—represented by the Deputy Governor’s wife, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat—praised the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) for consistently transforming lives through such programs.
WAPA Commissioner, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, advised beneficiaries to use the equipment wisely and avoid selling them.
“Invest wisely. Do not despise humble beginnings. Share your knowledge and mentor others in your community,” she said.
