NDC disowns 59-member OK Movement campaign council

The leadership of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has disowned a 59-member presidential campaign council announced by the OK Movement, a support group backing the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and his running mate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The party said the campaign council was constituted without its authorisation and directed the public and the media to disregard the announcement.

The NDC National Chairman, Cleopas Moses, made the position known in a statement on Saturday, following the unveiling of the campaign council by the OK Movement on Thursday.

The 59-member council comprises zonal and state coordinators and directors responsible for mobilisation, women’s affairs, strategy, security, legal affairs and other areas.

The movement had named its Director-General, John Ughulu, and National Secretary, Saadatu Sani, as the director-general and secretary of the campaign council respectively.

Explaining the purpose of the structure, Sani said the movement was established to mobilise Nigerians around the possibility of a “better, more prosperous, united and functional Nigeria”.

However, Moses said the initiative did not have the approval of the party leadership.

“The party hereby dissociates itself in totality from the said OK Movement PCC announcement. It did not emanate from the party and should be disregarded by the public and the media,” he said.
