The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has announced that Nigeria is poised to become a global mining hub through ongoing government reforms aimed at revitalizing the sector.
Speaking at the opening of the 2024 Nigeria Mining Week, themed “From Inside Out: Building the Mining Sector to be the Cornerstone of Nigeria’s Economy,” Dr. Alake highlighted significant achievements in sanitizing the mining sector, improving investment prospects, and fostering international collaborations.
In his keynote address, he revealed that the establishment of the Nigeria Solid Minerals Corporation is nearing completion. This corporation, he said, will play a central role in reshaping the industry.
“This corporate entity will serve as Nigeria’s face in the international mining arena, driving joint ventures and maximizing the potential of legacy brownfields,” the minister stated.
Dr. Alake detailed the government’s robust efforts to curb illegal mining through a combination of enforcement and engagement strategies. Over 300 illegal miners have been arrested and are currently facing prosecution, with investigations ongoing nationwide.
To encourage formalization within the sector, 250 artisanal mining cooperatives have been established. He also unveiled plans for a multi-agency Mining Marshals squad, which will utilize satellite technology to enhance surveillance and enforcement.
Emphasizing the government’s focus on innovation, Dr. Alake announced the establishment of a state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence within the ministry.
The facility, equipped with artificial intelligence and data analytics tools, is designed to revolutionize mineral resource management while promoting transparency and accountability.
“This is not just a symbol of our commitment to innovation but a functional engine for strategic planning and operational efficiency,” he explained.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, commended Dr. Alake for his dedication to revitalizing the mining sector.
He remarked that the ongoing reforms align with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, positioning the mining industry as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s economic growth.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting responsible and efficient mining practices, pledging full support for the institutional transformation of the sector.
