Nollywood star Funke Akindele sets record as ‘Behind The Scenes’ hits ₦2bn

Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele’s new release, Behind The Scenes, has delivered a groundbreaking performance by surpassing the ₦2 billion mark at the box office, establishing itself as one of Nollywood’s leading films in the African movie industry.

This was disclosed on Monday by the movie’s distributor, FilmOne Entertainment, in a Twitter post describing the feat as “record-breaking” and confirming that ticket sales had reached ₦2,103,039,706. The distributor further noted that the film is currently the top-grossing Nollywood movie in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

Describing Funke as the highest-grossing writer, director, and producer in West Africa, the distributor added that Behind The Scenes’ success reaffirms Akindele’s status as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker, holding the title of box office queen for three consecutive years.

Appreciating viewers for their support, FilmOne Entertainment thanked audiences for “believing in the magic of storytelling,” noting that the movie’s earnings progressed from the ₦1 billion benchmark to ₦1.77 billion before ultimately surpassing the ₦2 billion mark.

Behind The Scenes explores the theme of communal obligations, examining the emotional, social, and financial pressures faced by individuals responsible for supporting extended families. The film features a stellar cast that effectively conveys the writer’s message.

Its outstanding success is attributed to a combination of relatable storytelling, strong casting, Akindele’s sustainable approach to project delivery, and a guerrilla marketing strategy.

Building on previous blockbuster projects including Everybody Loves Jenifa, Tribe of Judah, and Battle on Buka Street, Behind The Scenes adds to Akindele’s growing list of box office achievements.
