Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has defended his decision to appear in the Senate chamber wearing an outfit branded with the inscription “Tinubu 2027,” describing it as a fashionable creation from Aba and dismissing criticisms as misplaced.

The former Governor of Abia State and ex-Chief Whip of the 9th Senate made these remarks during a live appearance on Politics Today, a current affairs programme aired Monday evening on Channels Television.

The senator’s outfit, which sparked widespread reactions on social media and in political circles, featured bold support for a second-term bid by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Critics accused Kalu of engaging in political sycophancy and premature campaigning. However, the senator dismissed the controversy, insisting that his choice of clothing was rooted in local pride and personal freedom.

“It is a very beautiful dress,” Kalu said during the interview. “I forgot to wear it for this interview. I would have worn it. I have thousands. Most people like it.”

He proudly highlighted the local origin of the outfit, crediting Aba-based tailors for its production.

“Who else would have made that dress other than Aba tailors? It was made in Aba, dyed in Aba, and delivered in Aba,” he said. “It is only Aba people, who are hardworking, that can do it.”

Pressed on whether he would wear the controversial attire again despite public backlash, Kalu remained defiant.

“It’s very fashionable, and I will wear it again. I have it in different colours,” he said.
