President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate activation of emergency response measures following devastating floods in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, which have caused loss of lives and widespread displacement.

At least 110 people have died in floods caused by torrential rainfall in central Nigeria, which lasted for several hours, according to the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba-Arah.

In a statement posted on his X account on Friday, the President expressed deep concern over the disaster and conveyed heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the people of Niger State.

“Upon receiving initial reports, I immediately directed the activation of the National Emergency Response Centre,” President Tinubu said. He confirmed that he had been fully briefed by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on the extent of the flooding and the urgent need for humanitarian support.

The President ordered the deployment of relief materials and temporary shelters to the affected communities and assured Nigerians that no one impacted by the disaster would be left behind or unheard.

Search-and-rescue operations are underway, with federal agencies fully mobilised to support ongoing efforts by the Niger State Government. Security agencies have also been directed to assist with emergency operations to ensure swift and safe interventions.

President Tinubu emphasized the federal government’s commitment to a coordinated, compassionate response that prioritizes saving lives, restoring dignity, and accelerating recovery.

Calling for national solidarity, he urged Nigerians to keep the victims in their thoughts and prayers, stressing that “in times of adversity, we draw strength from our unity, resilience, and shared humanity.”
