Why we are taking Headies to Toronto — Ayo Animashaun

The founder of The Headies Awards, Ayo Animashaun, has said the decision to host the prestigious music awards in Toronto, Canada, is part of efforts to expand the global reach of African music and strengthen institutions that celebrate the continent’s creative achievements.

Animashaun said Toronto was selected because of the opportunities it offers in terms of partnerships, infrastructure, international visibility, and economic support needed to stage the awards on a scale that reflects the growing influence of African music worldwide.

According to him, the move should not be seen as a departure from Nigeria, stressing that Lagos remains the home of The Headies and the foundation upon which the awards were built.

“The Headies was born in Nigeria, built in Nigeria, and its roots remain firmly planted in Nigeria. As support and opportunities continue to grow, we look forward to bringing even greater global attention, investment, and opportunities back to our home market,” he said.

Animashaun explained that the decision is aimed at expanding Nigeria’s cultural footprint, strengthening African institutions, and ensuring that African music, creators, and stories continue to gain recognition on the global stage.

He maintained that the awards ceremony remains committed to promoting Nigerian and African talent while leveraging international platforms to increase visibility for the continent’s music industry.

“The Headies is not moving away from home. The Headies is taking home to the world,” Animashaun stated.
