Yoruba monarchs rally around new Alaafin to preserve tradition, unity

The Olugbon of Orile-Igbon, Oba Olushola Alao, has reaffirmed the cultural and historical significance of the Alaafin of Oyo stool, describing it as a symbol of unity and pride for the Yoruba people.
He made the statement during a visit by the newly installed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, to his palace in Orile-Igbon, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.
Oba Alao emphasized that while society continues to evolve, tradition remains a sacred compass. “The Alaafin stool is the most powerful and historically significant traditional institution not only in Oyo but across Yorubaland,” he stated, noting its deep roots that predate the Oyo Empire.
Commenting on the prolonged inactivity of the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, the Olugbon expressed optimism that the body would soon be revitalized. He disclosed that Governor Seyi Makinde is actively working to restore the council’s function.
“I believe Governor Makinde means well. We’ve discussed this issue, and he is committed to resolving it,” he said, expressing confidence that the council will be reconstituted before the governor’s term ends.
The Olugbon lauded the Alaafin’s decision to begin his palace tour with a visit to Orile-Igbon, promising his full support to strengthen ties between Orile-Igbon and the Oyo Kingdom.
In response, Oba Owoade commended the Olugbon for his efforts in preserving Yoruba cultural heritage and fostering unity among traditional institutions.
He also extended appreciation to other traditional rulers in Surulere LGA for their warm welcome and pledged to promote harmony among monarchs throughout Yorubaland.
