2027: Obi vows lawful resistance against any attempt to rig election

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has vowed that any attempt to rig the 2027 general election would be resisted through lawful and legitimate means.

Speaking in Enugu on Wednesday, Obi called for the early verification of academic records of candidates, stressing that such a step would help prevent avoidable pre-election disputes.

Obi spoke while formally announcing his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a party aligned with a broader opposition coalition.

According to him, Nigeria’s democracy is increasingly under threat from individuals who once benefitted from the system but have now become instruments of its erosion.

“We have all watched those who benefitted from our democracy now becoming accessories in destroying it, either through coercion or gangsterism,” he said.

Obi lamented what he described as the growing normalization of electoral malpractice, noting that electoral fraud is now being openly celebrated in some quarters.

“We cannot allow this to continue. Those planning to rig elections in Nigeria ahead of 2027 should know that we will resist it by every lawful and legitimate means,” he declared.
