APC’s popularity rooted in performance, not dominance — Tinubu

By Kunle Sanni

President Bola Tinubu has dismissed concerns that Nigeria is becoming a one-party state, insisting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is gaining widespread support due to its performance and reforms over the past two years.

Speaking at the APC Renewed Hope Agenda Summit held Thursday at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, Tinubu said the APC’s growing popularity is driven by results—not dominance.

“A one-party system is not suitable for democracy,” Tinubu said. “But we are one party that is delivering. Nigerians are aligning with us because they believe in what we’re doing. You don’t expect people to stay on a sinking ship.”

The summit, which brought together the APC National Working Committee, National Assembly leadership, Progressive Governors Forum, and other stakeholders, reviewed the administration’s performance and key economic achievements. The event also saw major endorsements for Tinubu’s second-term bid in 2027.

The President defended his administration’s tough policy choices, including the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and ongoing tax reforms. “Yes, we faced challenges when we assumed office in May 2023. But we’ve made progress through bold and necessary economic reforms,” he said.

Tinubu said his government is focused on long-term goals and that the early signs are encouraging. “Our economy is attracting foreign investment. Jobs will follow. So will goods, services, and ultimately, improved standards of living,” he stated.

Citing the fight against corruption, the President pointed to asset recoveries made by anti-graft agencies and criticized the former multiple exchange rate system, which he described as the “grandfather of corruption.”

In a strong show of support, Imo State Governor and Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, moved a motion endorsing Tinubu for a second term in 2027. The motion was seconded by Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani.
