Beauty of religious tolerance among Yorubas: the case of Samu Adedoyin and Rasaq Okoya, by Abiola Falayajo

Religious tolerance remains one of the most admirable virtues of the Yoruba people of southwestern Nigeria. It is a cultural inheritance that has allowed communities to flourish, families to remain united, and friendships to grow across generations regardless of religious differences.

In Yoruba society, Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists coexist peacefully, often within the same family structure, reflecting a deep-rooted belief that “iwa l’ewa” -good character is superior to religious identity.

One of the most iconic modern examples of this Yoruba ethos is the exemplary friendship between Prince Samuel Adedoyin, the distinguished industrialist and founder of the Doyin Group, and Alhaji Rasaq Akanni Okoya, the legendary Chairman of Eleganza Group. For over six decades, these two giants of industry -one a devoted Christian and the other a committed Muslim, have maintained a bond of mutual respect, unwavering loyalty, and genuine brotherhood.

Their friendship reflects the Yoruba understanding that religion should never be a barrier to human connection. Despite differences in faith, both men celebrate one another’s milestones, support each other in business and personal endeavours, and speak openly about their shared values of hard work, humility, and communal upliftment. Their relationship has outlived political transitions, economic seasons, and generational shifts, standing as a shining testament to Yoruba religious harmony.

This unparalleled friendship is not an exception but a continuation of an age-long Yoruba culture where tolerance is deeply embedded in daily life. In many Yoruba homes, it is normal to find Christians, Muslims, and traditionalists living under the same roof, celebrating one another’s festivals, attending important ceremonies together, and upholding mutual respect. A family may hold Christian carols during Christmas, observe Jumat prayers on Friday, and still honour traditional rites during naming or burial ceremonies -all without friction.

Across Yoruba towns, Obas serve as custodians of all faiths, promoting peaceful coexistence and ensuring that no belief system is marginalised. Religious organisations collaborate on community development, humanitarian support, and peacebuilding, reinforcing unity over division.

The beauty of Yoruba religious tolerance lies in its celebration of differences rather than the erasure of them. As the Yoruba say, “A lè má ní ìgbàgbọ́ kan naa, Ṣùgbọ́n a lè bọ̀wọ̀ fún ara wa, a sì ní ìfẹ̀ ọmọnìkejì sí ara wa, a sì lè ṣe ọmọlúwàbí sí ara wa” -we may not share the same beliefs, but we can share respect and humanity. This inclusive worldview remains one of the greatest cultural gifts the Yoruba people offer to Nigeria and the world.

In an era when religious intolerance often fuels conflict, the peaceful coexistence embodied by Yoruba society -exemplified so powerfully by the over six-decade friendship of Prince Adedoyin and Alhaji Okoya -stands as a timeless lesson. Their story reminds us that faith may guide our hearts, but character is what binds us together.

Let there be peaceful religious coexistence across the world. Every faith tradition should have the freedom to thrive without fear or intimidation. No religion should seek to dominate, suppress, or silence others. True spirituality flourishes where mutual respect, understanding, and harmony are upheld. A world where diverse beliefs coexist peacefully is a world where humanity prospers.
