Chris Piwuna emerges as new ASUU President after contested election

Chris Piwuna, a professor of medicine and consultant psychiatrist, has been elected as the new president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
His emergence follows a four-day election held from May 8 to 12 during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Edo State.
Piwuna, who previously served as the national vice president of ASUU and was the former dean of student affairs at the University of Jos (UNIJOS), defeated Adamu Babayo, a professor from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU).
Though ASUU is yet to issue an official statement, the outgoing president, Emmanuel Osodeke, confirmed the result and indicated that a formal announcement would be made soon.
With his election, Piwuna becomes the 14th president of the academic union. He earned his medical degree from UNIJOS in 2000 and obtained a Master’s degree from the University of Malta in 2013.
A fellow of the West African College of Physicians, Piwuna is also a member of the International Psychogeriatric Association. He currently serves as a consultant psychiatrist at UNIJOS teaching hospital and has published research focusing on the quality of life in elderly populations.
