No fewer than five operatives of the Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, were injured on Friday following a violent attack by armed individuals in Awo, Egbedore Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Yusuf Idowu Abass, the incident began when the Oniwoye of Iwoye lodged a formal complaint regarding an unauthorized burial on land believed to be reserved for ancestral rites.
Abass said four Amotekun operatives were dispatched to the site to investigate the claim. Upon arrival, they discovered that the burial had already been completed.
However, the operatives were allegedly ambushed by a group led by one Ismaila Aluko, described as a notorious and long-wanted thug, who launched a brutal attack on them, leaving several injured.
He said, “The operatives tactically withdrew to the Awo Command to seek reinforcement. However, in a shocking turn of events, the hoodlums regrouped and staged a second attack on the Amotekun office in Awo.”
Abass stated that the second confrontation occurred in the presence of officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), as well as individuals identified as relatives of the attackers.
During the assault, the assailants allegedly attempted to seize weapons from the Amotekun operatives and inflicted serious injuries on them. The injured officers were immediately taken to a medical facility for emergency treatment.
Meanwhile, the Amotekun Corps has condemned the incident, describing it as a direct attack on the security and peace of the state. The Corps warned that such acts would not be tolerated and assured that efforts are underway, in collaboration with other security agencies, to identify and prosecute all individuals involved.
