Ex-AGF Malami speaks after release, vows to clear name
Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has declared that he stands by all decisions taken during his time in office, stating that he has no regrets despite ongoing legal challenges.
Speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa on Wednesday, Malami described his experiences in the custody of the EFCC, DSS, and at Kuje Prison as part of a divine process, saying he accepts the situation but remains determined to clear his name.
“I have spent time in EFCC custody, Kuje Prison, and with the DSS. I believe it is all God’s will, and I accept it, but I will defend myself against the allegations,” he said.
He also alleged that his fundamental rights were breached during the course of investigations, claiming that security operatives conducted searches on his residences and business premises without his knowledge or presence, while insisting he would vigorously defend his record in office.
Malami, who is facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering alongside his wife, Bashir Asabe, and son, Abdulaziz, reaffirmed his intention to contest the allegations in court. The trio had earlier pleaded not guilty to charges brought against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The former minister was rearrested by operatives of the Department of State Services on January 19 shortly after regaining freedom from Kuje Prison, a development that added another twist to his legal troubles.
He later accused the DSS of restricting his access to both family members and legal representatives during his detention, raising concerns over the conditions of his custody.
On February 27, a Federal High Court in Abuja granted Malami and his son bail in the sum of N200 million each over separate allegations linked to terrorism. Having met the bail conditions, he has since been released.
