FCT gets new Commissioner of Police as PSC confirms Opara’s appointment

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has a new Commissioner of Police, following the appointment of Peter Opara by the Police Service Commission (PSC).

Opara succeeds Benneth Igwe, who was recently promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) and assigned to Zone 7, Abuja.

The confirmation of Opara’s appointment was made public on Saturday, September 14, through a statement issued by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations at the PSC. According to Ani, Opara’s extensive experience in various police roles will contribute significantly to maintaining peace and security in the nation’s capital.

Before his new appointment, Opara served as the Commissioner of Police at the Force Secretary’s Office. He has also held key positions including Deputy Commissioner of Administration and Finance for the Imo State Command, and Personal Assistant to the former Chairman of the PSC, retired Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro.

His experience extends internationally, having served as the Senior Deputy Defence Adviser at Nigeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, and as DCP at the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano.

In a related development, the PSC also approved a change of leadership in Akwa Ibom State, with Festus Eribo replacing Miller Gagere Dantawaye as the Commissioner of Police.

Eribo, a law graduate from the University of Calabar, has held several senior positions, including Area Commander in Lagos, Deputy Commissioner of Operations in Kogi State, and Commissioner of Police in Taraba State.

The PSC has recently made similar postings for the Commissioners of Police in Abia, Lagos, and Ebonyi states, in line with its ongoing efforts to strengthen police leadership across the country.
