Lagos guber race: Hamzat names Obanikoro Campaign Director-General
The Deputy Governor of Lagos State and governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obafemi Hamzat, has appointed Senator Musiliu Obanikoro as the Director-General of his 2027 governorship campaign.
Western Post gathered that the appointment was announced at an expanded meeting of the campaign council as preparations for the 2027 polls continue.
The appointment comes as Hamzat intensifies preparations for the APC governorship primary ahead of the 2027 general election. His campaign structure became clearer after he submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Thursday, May 29, 2026.
Obanikoro, a former Minister of State for Defence and Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2007, was among party leaders who accompanied Hamzat during the submission of the nomination forms.
Other notable APC figures present at the event included Senator Ganiyu Solomon, Representative James Faleke, and several party stakeholders who have been actively involved in consultations surrounding Hamzat’s governorship ambition.
Since the commencement of political consultations on April 13, Obanikoro has emerged as a key figure in Hamzat’s campaign efforts, participating in nearly all strategic engagements and stakeholder meetings across the state.
He accompanied the deputy governor on visits to prominent political leaders, including Governance Advisory Council (GAC) leader Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly Mudashiru Obasa, and elders of the Ikorodu Division.
Hamzat has also held consultations with members of the GAC, the APC State Working Committee, Speaker Obasa, Senator Solomon, and influential political groups in Ikorodu, Mushin, and Surulere as part of efforts to consolidate support for his governorship bid.
Obanikoro, a former PDP chieftain, ambassador, and two-term senator who joined the APC in 2017, is expected to leverage his grassroots network and cross-party influence to unite various political blocs behind Hamzat’s ambition.
