Nigerian singer Tems performs at Obama Presidential Center opening

Grammy Award-winning Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, performed at the opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, alongside other global stars.

Tems’ performance followed the Obama Foundation’s announcement of performers lined up for the historic event, placing the songstress as the only Nigerian artiste on the roster. She performed alongside global icons including Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Jennifer Hudson, Christina Aguilera, Common, The Roots, Eddie Vedder, Marc Anthony, U2’s The Edge and Marsai Martin.

According to the foundation, the event is a once-in-a-generation celebration of democracy, culture, service and hope, and was livestreamed worldwide from the Center’s John Lewis Plaza.

Former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, described the Presidential Center as a full-circle moment for Chicago’s South Side, noting that it transforms a previously underutilised space into a hub for history, leadership, education and community engagement.

Reflecting on the location’s personal significance, she said, “So much of my existence as a child into high school was driving past this very location where there was really nothing. It was a highway. It was a dangerous place. It was an unutilised park space”.

The centre, a landmark venue combining a museum, library and educational hub, is expected to host community spaces, conference facilities and the Obama Foundation’s nonprofit initiatives. It will open to the public on Friday, with celebrations continuing through the weekend.

Tems is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer who rose to prominence after featuring on Wizkid’s 2020 hit song Essence. She is known for her deep, soulful vocal style and has won multiple international awards.
