Ogun police deny criminalising Ajuwon tenants’ dispute

The Ogun State Police Command has dismissed a publication alleging that the police criminalised a civil dispute involving tenants in the Ajuwon area of the state, describing the report as misleading and distorted.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command said the publication titled “Ogun Police, Tenants and the Peril of Criminalising Civil Disputes” contained incomplete and inaccurate information about the incident.

According to the police, the matter was originally reported on April 9, 2026, by a family member of the victim, who alleged that the victim was involved in an altercation with tenants over electricity-related issues.

The command disclosed that the disagreement reportedly resulted in a physical confrontation and a subsequent medical incident involving the landlord, prompting the police to commence an investigation into allegations of assault and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.

It explained that, in line with standard procedures, all parties involved were lawfully invited for questioning, while statements were obtained and the scene of the incident assessed by investigators.

The police further noted that the matter was handled at the divisional level and that the parties were granted administrative bail in accordance with established procedures, while efforts were made to de-escalate tensions and achieve an amicable resolution.

According to the statement, the complainant later formally withdrew the case through a written letter, confirming that the dispute had been amicably resolved by the parties involved.

The command maintained that no individual was unlawfully detained at any point during the process and insisted that the matter was investigated strictly as a criminal complaint involving assault and breach of peace, and not as a tenancy enforcement issue. It also urged members of the public to disregard sensational reports and rely only on verified information from official police communication channels.
