Actress Biodun Okeowo reflects on single motherhood while celebrating son’s graduation

Veteran Nollywood actress, Biodun Okeowo, popularly known as Omoborty, has shared an emotional account of her journey as a single parent while celebrating the graduation of her son, Ayo, from Concordia University of Edmonton in Canada.

In a heartfelt post shared on her Instagram page on Monday, the actress said her intention was to motivate other single parents and acknowledge their worth and sacrifices. She urged those raising children alone not to grow weary, stressing that no sacrifice made for one’s child is ever in vain.

Reflecting on her experience, Biodun revealed that she could neither wear fashionable clothes nor attend social events because her priority was funding her son’s education. According to her, virtually every income she earned from 2018 was channelled towards achieving that goal.

She also disclosed that there were difficult moments when she had to sell her personal gold jewellery to ensure her son’s tuition fees were paid. She recalled periods of emotional breakdown when both she and her son cried during video calls due to the heavy financial burden.

Addressing public misconceptions, Okeowo explained that people often assume anyone who sends a child abroad for studies is financially comfortable. She noted that social media often showcases glamour while concealing the enormous responsibilities people carry privately.

The actress added that she funded her son’s education entirely through hard work and personal sacrifice rather than through public donations or borrowing.

Reminiscing about the emotional burden of being separated from her child, Biodun revealed that they were apart for five years after her visa expired during the COVID-19 period. She described the experience as one of the most difficult periods of her life.

In a separate post, she noted that although social media is often associated with negativity, her experience showed that it can also connect people with destiny helpers. She recounted meeting a woman identified as Chez Ranti online, whom she entrusted with caring for her son throughout his stay abroad, a relationship that later blossomed into a close friendship.
