Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering commitment to promoting and preserving culture and tradition in the state.

Governor Makinde made this known on Thursday at the grand finale of the 2025 World Egungun Festival, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Oke-Ado, Ibadan.

The event was graced by the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja (represented by the Maye Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Lekan Alabi), the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism in Osun State, Hon. Ojo Abiodun, the President of Oje Parapo Worldwide, Prince Adeola Adelakun, and Oyo State’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Wasiu Olatunbosun.

Makinde, represented by his Deputy, Barrister Adebayo Lawal, urged Nigerians not to allow their cultural heritage to fade into extinction.

He emphasized that preserving cultural values would contribute to the state’s drive to generate more revenue through cultural tourism and boost the economy.

Addressing the gathering, the governor noted that culture and tourism have been prioritized by his administration.

“We must not allow our culture to go into extinction, and I am happy because it is not only the elderly who are here today—we can also see our youths enjoying the moment. That is why we must continue to relive and promote our culture,” he said.

Makinde also highlighted the government’s respect for religious freedom, stating, “This administration has been very tolerant of people practicing their faith. We declared August 20th of every year as Isese Day because we respect freedom of religion. We operate in accordance with the law and will never go against it.”
