I’ll work with Malami, El-Rufai despite ongoing corruption trials — Obi
The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, now a member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), says he is willing to work with members of the party, including Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai, despite allegations of corruption against them.
Speaking during a programme on Magic FM in Aba, Abia State, Obi explained that engaging with such individuals could provide an opportunity to influence them positively if found culpable.
He also suggested that some of those facing allegations may be victims of selective justice, arguing that others with more serious offences appear to go unpunished.
Obi cited former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, questioning why they were being targeted despite their contributions to government.
El-Rufai is currently facing charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over alleged fraud and money laundering, while Malami, alongside his wife and son, is standing trial on a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). They have all pleaded not guilty.
He maintained that he remains the most qualified candidate to represent the ADC in the next presidential election, citing his background in business, banking, and governance.
“When Jesus came here, his friends were tax collectors and prostitutes because it was part of what he was trying to change. Most of them are facing persecution, and the law is being selectively applied while others who have done worse go free,” Obi said.
He added that his experience and track record place him ahead of other contenders, expressing confidence in his capacity to lead and deliver effective governance.
