First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has been named Grand Patron for the 2025 African Women’s Volleyball Championship, set to take place in April.
Speaking at the State House, Abuja, during a courtesy visit by officials of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the National Sports Commission (NSC), Senator Tinubu reaffirmed that women have a place in all spheres of life in Nigeria and can achieve greatness through hard work and dedication.
She emphasized the importance of mentorship for young Nigerian girls, urging successful female athletes to return home and inspire the next generation. “It is not just about your success; share your stories, including your humble beginnings, to encourage others,” she said.
Acknowledging the contributions of female athletes to Nigeria’s sporting achievements, the First Lady encouraged them to lift others up, adding that leadership comes with a responsibility to inspire and support others.
The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Wale Adeniyi, who led the delegation, said Senator Tinubu was chosen as Grand Patron due to her commitment to supporting female athletes.
“There is a popular saying that when a woman puts her hand to the plough, the earth itself will respond to her. Your dedication to sports development is a great source of inspiration to us all,” Adeniyi stated.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olapade, also praised the Tinubu administration’s support for sports, highlighting its positive impact, particularly on female athletes.
“The vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the support of the First Lady have given new life to sports in Nigeria, especially for women. The Nigerian girl child can now truly hold her head high,” Olapade said.
