The Osun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into the shooting and subsequent death of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo on Wednesday.
The command, in a statement issued by its spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said Yusuf, a resident of the Oke-Ayepe area of Osogbo, was shot by suspected hoodlums at about 4pm.
According to the police, the incident occurred shortly after Governor Ademola Adeleke, accompanied by his nephew, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, paid a courtesy visit to the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, at the monarch’s palace.
The police said that immediately after the visit, one Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, an ex-convict, suspected notorious thug and alleged member of an eye confraternity, attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team.
The statement said, “The ensuing confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members in the vicinity, who temporarily blocked the entrance to the palace and obstructed the movement of the convoy. The convoy eventually left the area safely. Shortly afterwards, the suspected gang members reportedly departed the vicinity and, on their way, allegedly shot Tajudeen Yusuf in the Ita-Olokan area of Osogbo”.
Ojelabi said the police immediately mobilised a patrol team to the scene, where the victim was found lying in a pool of blood and was subsequently rushed to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, for medical attention. He was, however, pronounced dead by doctors on duty.
He said the command had commenced a full-scale investigation into the incident and intensified efforts to identify, apprehend and bring the fleeing suspects to justice.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the act and assured residents that the command would deploy all available resources to apprehend those responsible.
