Road safety: Oyo Assembly moves to revive trailer parks

The Oyo State House of Assembly has called on the state government to resuscitate trailer parks in Ogbomoso and other locations across the state.
The call, contained in a motion moved by the lawmaker representing Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere State Constituency, Hon. Abideen Ogundare, during Tuesday’s plenary session, is aimed at improving road safety and enhancing the state’s economic benefits.
In his motion, submitted during a session presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi, Ogundare emphasized the importance of trailer parks in reducing traffic congestion by providing safe spaces for trailers to park, rather than obstructing major highways.
He cited locations such as Odo-Oba and Orile-Igbon in Ogbomoso, Eleekara in Oyo, and Akinyele in Ibadan as areas where trailer parks should be revived.
Speaking on the benefits of the parks, Ogundare said they would not only improve road safety but also increase the state’s revenue base, provide employment, and stimulate local businesses.
He stressed that reviving trailer parks aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s agenda of expanding the state’s economy, noting that well-structured logistics and transportation management are key to facilitating commercial activities and protecting lives.
Passing the resolutions, Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi urged the state and local governments to collaborate in conducting a comprehensive assessment of all abandoned trailer parks across the state with a view to rehabilitating them.
He also tasked the House Committee on Transport with engaging relevant stakeholders—including the trailer drivers’ union, logistics companies, and community leaders—to gather insights and recommendations for effective trailer park operations.
