Council chairman explains closure of Kara markets in 7 Kwara LGAs

By Mosunmola Ayobami, Ilorin –

The Executive Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area in Kwara State, Alhaji Femi Yusuf, has disclosed that the closure of Kara markets across seven Local Government Areas was aimed at curbing the activities of informants aiding kidnappers in the region.

He explained that the markets, which are primarily cattle markets and typically operate from noon until the early hours of the following day, will now only be allowed to open from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Yusuf made this known while speaking on News Keg, a media engagement organized by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Kwara State Council, on Wednesday in Ilorin.

Marking his first anniversary in office, the chairman stated that his administration has impacted over 100 communities through projects that have improved living standards, enhanced security, and strengthened community development.

He noted that the council has constructed and renovated primary healthcare centres across various wards, provided solar-powered boreholes, installed solar streetlights, graded and expanded roads, and supplied motorcycles to police formations to support security operations.

“In the area of security, we have engaged hunters and vigilantes, supported traditional rulers with identity cards, and strengthened collaboration with state and federal authorities to protect our communities,” he said.

Yusuf expressed appreciation to the state governor, traditional rulers, and community leaders for their continued support, and called on stakeholders to pray for peace and stability in the state.

“As we begin our second year in office, we look forward to implementing more transformative projects, particularly in road construction, education, healthcare, and security. I urge all stakeholders to set politics aside and work together for the prosperity of Ifelodun Local Government and Kwara State,” he added.
