Emir Sanusi cancels Sallah Durbar in Kano over security threats

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has officially cancelled this year’s Sallah Durbar celebrations, citing credible security threats, including intelligence reports of a planned attack targeting him during the festivities.
The announcement followed a sweeping ban imposed by the Kano State Joint Security Command on all Sallah-related activities, including the traditional Durbar procession, horse riding, car racing, and public gatherings. Authorities attributed the decision to escalating security concerns across the state.
In a public address from the palace, Emir Sanusi said the suspension of the Durbar was a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding lives and maintaining order during the Eid celebrations.
“We have received credible intelligence indicating a threat to my life during the Durbar procession,” the Emir stated. “Youths in areas such as Zage and Kofar Wambai have reportedly been mobilised by unpatriotic political actors to disrupt the event.”
He urged district, ward, and village heads to remain within their respective communities and fully comply with the directive to avoid any potential unrest.
The Emir emphasized that the peace and stability of Kano must not be compromised, particularly by politically motivated violence during a period meant for communal celebration.
