IPI demands recall of expelled Channels TV journalists in Akwa Ibom

The International Press Institute (IPI) has condemned the expulsion of two Channels TV journalists from the Akwa Ibom State Government House, demanding their immediate recall.
The affected journalists, a correspondent and a cameraman, were removed on the orders of the state government after Channels TV aired a video clip showing Governor Umo Eno allegedly confirming plans to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a press statement jointly signed by IPI Legal Adviser and Chairman of its Advocacy Committee, Tobi Soniyi, and Committee Secretary, Ochiaka Ugwu, the institute described the action as “reckless” and an “alarming development,” stressing that journalists should not face humiliation for performing their duties.
“This is a direct attack on the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression,” the statement read, citing Section 22 of Chapter 2, which affirms the media’s role in holding government accountable.
IPI criticized the move as a violation of democratic principles and expressed disappointment in Governor Umo Eno, previously seen as a media-friendly leader.
The institute urged the governor to reverse the expulsion to prevent further damage to his administration’s reputation.
IPI reaffirmed its commitment to supporting impartial journalism and emphasized that press freedom remains a cornerstone of democracy.
The expulsion has sparked concern among media professionals and rights groups, raising questions about press freedom in Akwa Ibom State.
