Reconstituted education governing councils worse than the previous – ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has described the composition of the reconstituted governing councils of federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education as worse than the previous list.

The National President of the Union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke said the reconstituted governing council comprises retired politicians but no technocrats.

He contended that Nigeria cannot manage the universities as it is doing, appointing politicians to governing councils of educational institutions and expecting real development to happen.

President Bola Tinubu had in June 2023 dissolved the governing councils of the federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.

The Federal Government in May 2024, released the list of the new governing council official approved by the president.

But ASUU kicked against it, arguing that the tenure of the dissolved governing councils was not yet over. It called for their reinstatement, among other demands.

Following this development, the government set up a committee to reconstitute the governing councils of 61 universities.

On 14 June this year, a new list of Nigerians appointed into the reconstituted governing councils was announced.
