After North-west endorsement, Speaker Abass reveals more defectors to join APC

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, says more high-profile defections from opposition parties to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are imminent, reflecting growing confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s leadership.
Speaking on Saturday at the APC North-West Zonal Stakeholders’ Meeting in Kaduna, Abbas cited recent defections—including those of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa—as indicators of the ruling party’s strengthening appeal.
“We anticipate many more high-profile defections in the coming months, reflecting the growing confidence of Nigerians in our party and President Tinubu,” he said.
Abbas also celebrated the APC’s victory in the 2024 Edo State gubernatorial election, where Senator Monday Okpebholo emerged winner, describing it as a testament to the party’s grassroots strength and improved internal reforms.
The speaker highlighted the party’s internal strides, including enhanced candidate selection processes and revitalised grassroots structures, particularly in Zamfara and Sokoto states. He said the south-south region also witnessed strategic political realignments validated by recent electoral outcomes in Rivers and Bayelsa states.
He called on APC members in the north-west to remain united ahead of the 2027 general elections, noting that the region—with over 22 million registered voters, according to INEC data—is crucial in determining Nigeria’s political future.
Abbas urged party stakeholders to intensify grassroots mobilisation, especially by targeting youths and women through empowerment initiatives, to ensure continued dominance at the polls.
He concluded by emphasizing the importance of sustained political engagement and regional collaboration to consolidate the party’s national presence and electoral successes.
