The Ondo State Police Command has commenced security operations ahead of the forthcoming by-election in the state, assuring residents and electoral officials of adequate protection throughout the exercise.
The Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, gave the assurance during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, at the police headquarters in Akure.
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, in a statement issued on Friday, stating that the meeting focused on security preparations and collaboration among relevant agencies before the election.
Lawal said the command had already activated operational strategies aimed at preventing violence and maintaining order before, during and after the poll.
“We have commenced strategic planning to ensure adequate security across polling units, collation centres and other sensitive locations connected to the electoral process,” the CP said.
He added that security would also be provided for INEC officials, ad hoc staff, voters and electoral materials to guarantee a peaceful and credible election in the state.
The police commissioner further stated that intelligence gathering, patrols and coordinated operations would be intensified to prevent any attempt to disrupt public peace during the exercise.
Speaking during the visit, the REC commended the police for their preparedness and commitment to a violence-free election, while pledging continued collaboration with security agencies to ensure a transparent and hitch-free by-election.
