Senate Deputy Minority Leader Oyewumi dumps PDP for Accord party

By Deborah Oladejo, Osogbo –

The Senator representing Osun West, Lere Oyewumi, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the Accord Party.

Oyewumi, who was elected on the PDP platform in the 2023 general elections, formally registered as a member of the Accord Party in Ward 9, Ikire, in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State.

His defection was disclosed in a statement made available in Osogbo on Monday by his media aide, Omooba Popoola Biodun.

The statement noted that the lawmaker was received into the party by the Osun State Chairman of Accord, Victor Akande, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders during a registration ceremony held in his hometown.

Before leaving the PDP, Oyewumi was the last senator from Osun State elected on the party’s platform, following the earlier defections of Senator Olubiyi Fadeyi and Senator Francis Fadahunsi to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP in Osun had also previously lost three members of the House of Representatives to the APC during a series of defections in 2025.

A few weeks ago, six members of the House of Representatives and 25 members of the Osun State House of Assembly elected on the PDP platform also defected to the Accord Party.

According to the statement, Oyewumi’s decision to join Accord followed his earlier resignation from the PDP, which it attributed to irreconcilable differences within the party and his commitment to effective representation, responsive leadership, and policies aimed at promoting development for the people of his constituency and Osun State at large.
