PDP postpones NEC meeting to elect new national chairman
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s National Working Committee (NWC) has rescheduled its planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to nominate a new replacement for the position of national chairman from August to September 2024.
The party cited the absence of key partners who are away doing religious duties during the ongoing Hajj in Saudi Arabia.
The NEC meeting, which had previously been set for August 18, 2024, will now be held on September 12, 2024.
On April 18, the party’s NEC rescheduled the election of the new national chairperson till August 18.
The election is to fill the vacancy left by the suspension of former National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who was suspended by his ward in Gboko, Benue State.
On the April 18 NEC meeting, the party also directed that congresses be held in all wards, local governments, and states where the executives’ terms had ended. The congresses were supposed to lead to the election of a substantive national chairperson for the party.
However, in a letter signed by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, the party announced that owing to the upcoming Muslim festival, the planned NEC meeting and state congresses will no longer take place on August 18, as previously scheduled.
The letter read: “You may please recall our earlier letter dated Friday, April 19, 2024 in which we informed you of the National Executive Committee’s (NEC’s) approved timetable and schedule of activities for the 2024 party congresses for the purpose of electing new party executives at the appropriate levels.
“This is to formally inform you that the National Working Committee (NWC), on behalf of the National Executive Committee (NEC), at its 587th meeting held on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 approved the extension of the Membership drive to now end on Thursday, June 27, 2024.”
